Relations Coordinator
Job
Description
Purpose
This position is responsible for building
relationships with immigrant, religious, and community organizations
in order to support organizing campaigns and activities in the
Laborers’ Eastern Region (5 boroughs of NYC, Long Island, New
Jersey, Delaware).
Job Duties:
1.
Immigrant Rights
·
Work with various
immigrant organizations on a state and national level such as
o
National Coalition for
Dignity and Amnesty for Undocumented Workers
o
New Jersey Immigration
Policy Network
o
Workplace Project (Long
Island)
o
Latino Worker Center
(New York)
o
Coalition for Human
Rights (New York)
o
American Civil Liberties Union
o
Others
·
Makes recommendations
on the position of the Laborers’ Eastern Region in regards to
legislative and legal initiatives or changes of immigration law.
2.
Coordinates with Organizing Campaigns
·
Attends weekly lead organizer meetings
o
Discusses where and how broader community can
participate and/or assist organizing campaigns
o
Discusses where and how LEROF can participate and/or
assist community organizations.
o
Presents proposals of campaigns or rally’s (local,
state, and National) that LIUNA should play a role.
·
Works with lead organizers on petition drives in
communities where we have support.
3. Religious outreach
·
Meets with various religious organizations throughout
the Eastern Region.
·
Works with LEROF Training Coordinator to determine
where we have members with existing ties to religious organizations
and how these members can help build labor/religious ties.
4. Press conferences around community issues
·
Represents the Laborers’ Eastern Region at
immigration and/or community press conferences.
·
Coordinates and organizes press conferences in
conjunction with organizing campaigns (e.g., when workers are fired
for union activity).
5. Build relationships with housing
authorities, tenant organizations, and ACORN
·
Does outreach to tenant organizations and ACORN to
support organizing initiatives.
o
Explores ways these organizations can assist with
organizing initiatives as well as how LIUNA can assist these
organizations.
·
Attends meetings with housing authorities when
discussions revolve around the housing authority meeting HUD Section
3 requirements (i.e., 30% of the workers must be minorities).
o
Discusses how LIUNA’s apprenticeship and training
program can train low-income minority residents how to perform
construction work.
6.
Staff Development & Training
·
When and where appropriate, educates and trains LEROF
staff on various community related issues such as changes in
immigration law, housing authority rules and procedures, etc.
·
Teaches community relations portion of LEROF 2-Day
Training.
Salary & Benefits

Position
and Background
The Laborers’ Eastern Region Organizing Fund
(LEROF) is seeking an Immigration Attorney to work in Monroe
Township, NJ. This
position offers a unique opportunity to work with a progressive
union with a growing immigrant membership.
Responsibilities include providing legal immigration
counseling to union members, for example, identification issues
(driver’s licenses, social security cards, etc.) and collaborative
law enforcement (e.g., data sharing between DMVs, INS, NLRB, DOL,
and benefit agencies). In
addition, this position will work with and provide advice and
guidance to union organizers targeting a largely immigrant non-union
construction workforce.
The Laborers’ Eastern Region represents
approximately 40,000 members and geographically covers the 5
boroughs of NYC, Long Island, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Job Responsibilities:

Immigration counseling for union members
·
Meets with union
members needing assistance with immigration related matters. This membership consists primarily of Latino immigrants based
in New York City and northern New Jersey.
·
Provides legal immigration advice and assistance to
organizing staff
·
Attends weekly lead organizer meetings
o
Provides assistance on matters related to INS, threats
of deportation, workers rights under the NLRA, and employer
obligations under IRCA.
o
Discusses where and how broader non-profit community
organizations can participate and/or assist with organizing
campaigns.
·
Legislative issues
o
Interacts with other immigration advocates on
legislative proposals designed to change immigration law in a
fashion that positively impacts the union membership.
o
Makes recommendations to the union political action
department on legislative and legal initiatives pertaining to
immigration law.
o
Works with the international union’s staff at
headquarters based in Washington, DC on national, state, or local
demonstrations and/or rallies pertaining to immigration reform.

Public affairs
·
Represents the Laborers’ Eastern Region at
immigration and/or community press conferences.
·
Provides assistance with organizing press conferences
in conjunction with organizing campaigns (e.g., when workers are
fired for union activity but employer cites documented status).
·
Staff Development & Training
·
Educates and trains organizing staff on changes in
immigration laws and the potential impact on new workers being
organized.
Qualifications
·
Demonstrated commitment to the rights of low-income
immigrants.
·
Entry to mid-level attorney with expertise in immigration
law or policy.
·
Familiarity with INS, SSA, and other immigration-status
verification systems.
·
Familiarity with the NLRA and the rights of workers to
organize.
·
Experience in analyzing impact of laws, regulations, and
legislative proposals.
·
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and
effectively, both in writing and orally, to a variety of audiences.
·
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a
fast-moving environment.
·
Excellent research skills
·
Fluency in Spanish & English, both verbally and
written, a must.
·
Law degree.
