Mattapan
|
Mattapan is a
flourishing residential neighborhood located between
Milton, Hyde Park, Dorchester and Roslindale. The
Streetcars linking Ashmont to Mattapan make trips from
downtown to Mattapan fast and comfortable.
Mattapan
is composed of a diverse minority population including
African-American, Haitian and other Caribbean; very few
Caucasian and Hispanic descents reside in Mattapan.
|
Nevertheless,
racial harmony is exemplary in this neighborhood; there have
been no significant racially motivated incidents in this area
during the past fifteen years.Whites and Blacks have only one
aspiration: to build a better community that is socially
attractive and economically prosperous.
As the result of the community’s commitment and the
dedication of the Boston Police Department, the crime rate has
been drastically reduced in Mattapan.
Blue
Hill Avenue is a popular and peaceful hang out zone for
teenagers. There
are a variety of culturally oriented restaurants to choose from,
savory Caribbean food at Ali Roti’s, Italian food at Simco’s
or one of the many Chinese or Haitian restaurants along Blue
Hill Ave. and River Street.
The
commercial center of the neighborhood is commonly called
Mattapan Square; this is the section where Blue Hill Ave. meets
River Street and Cummins’ Hwy. The business center is
patrolled by community police officers and undercover agents
that make shoppers and residents feel secure to spend time in
Mattapan Square and have an enjoyable shopping experience.
In Mattapan, police and residents have developed a
friendly relationship.
Mattapan
Square lodges a variety of business organizations, including
three banks: Citizens, Sovereign and Fleet, several retail
stores, lawyer’s offices, medical buildings, business
consultants, restaurants and three ethnic local radio stations
broadcasted on 1580, 1620 and 1640 AM, as well as a newly
renovated post office. Mattapan
was annexed to Boston in 1870 as part of Dorchester.
