Town Computer Donates $70,000 To Help Haitian Children

In the summer of 2003, Jacques Dady Jean, the CEO of Town Computer, and his wife, Karrie Ann Jean, pledged to raise $70,000 by September 30 of this year, the amount needed by the Haitian Children’s Relief Project to sponsor two pilot programs in Gonaives and Carrefour aimed at assisting poor Haitian families with their school expenses.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere.  Close to 80% of the population is unemployed and nearly 75% of Haiti’s children do not have any possibility to go to school. The Haitian Children Relief Project was originally created due to the overall deteriorating conditions of the country. However, the fund has taken on a greater importance with the recent changes in government and tragic floods.  Haiti is now struggling for its survival after a bloody, political violence led by rebels supported by the Bush administration and a few small radical groups that overthrew the democratically elected president Jean Bertrand Aristide in February.

This Labor Day weekend Town Computer disbursed $35,000, the first half of the projected amount. The disbursement of the second half is scheduled for October 30th.  A shipment of school materials including notebooks, pencils, pens and school uniforms has been shipped to Haiti and are expected to reach their destination by the end of the month.

“This achievement has been made possible thanks to our customers, and the dedication and commitment of our team members and volunteers,” said Karrie Ann Jean, the co-founder and Vice President of Town Computer.
